Spooky owl

By Rick

The owl in this video is a White Faced Scops Owl Otus leucotis. When confronted with a barn owl Tyto alba it puffs up its feathers and assumes a threatening stance to ward the barn owl away.

Now the thing about owls is, although they look big, owls generally have small, slight bodies. They’re all feather. And the White Faced Scops Owl is particularly adept at puffing up or flattening its feathers. So when the owl is confronted next by an Eurasian Eagle Owl Bubo bubo sibiricus it feels threatened, clamps down its feathers and tries to look more like a tree limb or trunk than an owl. Of course that’s not very effective when tethered to a perch. But in a tree, that might be very different. Note that the owl’s white belly doesn’t make for good camouflage so he constantly positions himself so that his side and back are always facing his enemy. I love it!
